Do walk-in coolers typically require fire sprinklers?

Walk-in coolers and freezers in most areas are required to be installed with a sprinkler system. This has been standard practice since the mid 1980's. The sprinklers by nature have to be dry in these circumstances.

Walk-in coolers and freezers can be a very high hazard area considering that food is often shipped and stored in highly flammable plastic and cardboard packaging. There have been some very nasty fires in refrigerated food warehouses that have burned for days, even thought they started in a freezer with the door closed.
